How to Prolong the Life of Your Electric Bike Battery

Electric bikes have been around for more than 100 years, but its just in the past 15-20 years with the evolution of lithium-ion batteries that it has become economical to have an electric bike.

This same type of battery is the one used in your cellphone, laptop, and other everyday appliances. While you probably charge your smartphone every night, a bigger lithium-ion battery such as the ones used in electric bikes, require a bit more care than your average battery.

Here is how to prolong the life of your electric bike battery:

1. Don’t charge the battery to 100% and further

Don’t charge the battery to 100% and further. Leaving the battery charging past the full capacity is especially damaging to battery life, as it will decrease the capacity over time.

2. Temperature is important

Don’t charge the battery to 100% and further. Leaving the battery charging past the full capacity is especially damaging to battery life, as it will decrease the capacity over time.

3. Don’t let your battery die completely

Using 100% of your battery on occasion isn’t too detrimental, but having it constantly drop to absolutely no charge has been shown to ruin battery life. The amount of cycles a battery can perform lowers with every complete discharge, so try and top it up constantly as this will increase the lifespan.

4. Store it while partially charged

Store it while partially charged. Leaving a battery dead for a long time can leave it completely useless, causing irreparable cell damage depending on the time it was left standing for. Leaving a partial charge will let it slowly go down, as all lithium-ion batteries discharge slowly over time regardless. Just make sure you have enough of charge to let it sit for however long you’re planning to store it, because leaving it at 0 for too long will kill it.

5. Watch the throttle

Whether it be full power electric bikes or power assist bikes, your speed makes a big impact on battery. On power assist bikes especially, being conservative with the battery will extend the range significantly. Using power to get from stopped to moving can use a lot of battery power, so try to get some speed before using the motor.
Having an electric bike is a pretty big responsibility, but with the right care, especially with the battery, your bike can last years. Lithium-ion batteries when taken care of properly will last up to 5 years, but when disregarded it can be dead in a season or less. Take care of your batteries and your bikes will live a long healthy life!
