Mistakes ATV Beginners Make

You’ve gotten your first ATV and the first thing you want to do is hop on and ride. You’re probably thinking that hopping on and riding an ATV is as easy as taking a regular car for a ride.

However, did you know beginner riders on ATVs tend to make mistakes that result in crashes and serious injury? Fortunately, you can avoid making these mistakes while you’re riding with some instruction and know-how.

Here are the mistakes ATV beginners make:

1. Nerf Bars

You’ll constantly slip off with traditional foot pegs. So you should purchase nerf bars if you’re a beginner. New bars are gigantic foot pegs that allow you to stabilize your feet and get maximum control over your ATV.

2. Looping Out

It’s very easy to roll over an ATV. The easiest way to roll over your ATV is looping out. This is done by hitting the gas too hard and having little to no experience with the power of your ATV. The front of your ATV will spike up, then throw you on your back, and pin you underneath the ATV. Another way to roll over your ATV is when you’re having a bit too much fun sliding around in slick conditions.

3. False Sense of Security

Many beginners neglect wearing proper protective equipment. It’s important to wear protective gear, especially if you’re a new ATV rider. You’ll need to invest in protective equipment such as boots, helmet, and a jacket. Once you get more and more advance in riding an ATV, you’ll need to invest in neck brace, knee guards and a chest protector for a lot more protection.

4. Control of Throttle

It’s important to have control of the throttle. So take the time to practice easing onto the throttle in order to find the balance. If you’re a new ATV ride, you’ll need to press the throttle slowly. If you press too much or put too much “thumb,” it’ll make the front of the ATV to pop up.

5. Loading the ATV

You should never ride an ATV up a ramp into the back of a pick-up truck. The bed of a pick-up truck is relatively high off the ground, so the steep ramp incline and high center of gravity can cause the ATV to flip backward.
